Overview of the Summer School
CFA

This biennial Summer School Series, sponsored by the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation, is intended to introduce young scientists to current research in extragalactic astronomy. The schools are aimed promarily but not exclusively at graduate students in the early part of their PhD studies. They will consist of a small number of coherent lecture courses with mixed theoretical and observational emphasis. These will be given by internationally prominent specialists and will be supplemented by afternoon tutorials. Graduate students from Astronomy or Physics departments are welcome and are expected to have had courses in at least some of the following: astronomy, astrophysics, space physics, or related applied mathematics or theoretical physics. About 100 students will be accepted and will have their local costs covered. Participants from East Asian countries other than China are welcome.

This is the third in the series, it will be held in University of Science and Technology of China on May 21 to June 1 2007. The first was held in Shanghai in 2004 (Galaxy Formation: Charlot, Kauffmann, Mo, Pettini, White) and the second in Tianjin in 2005 (Clusters: Bower, Fabian, Frenk, Mellier, Rosati). The format is for each of the 5 lecturers to give three 1.5 hour lectures and also twice to spend an hour going through example exercises with the students. The lectures are in the mornings and exercises etc in the afternoon spread over a 2 week period. The idea of this particular summer school is to give a broad coverage of AGN astrophysics as a whole.
